WiFi Extension – Large Residential Property London

  • 1. The Problem

Our customer, based on Winnington Road in London, suffered from lack of WiFi signal in their home. Although their internet service was BT Infinity which is perfectly suitable for the level of internet bandwidth they are using, the location of the router was in very unfortunate location. From the garage in the corner of the house, router was obviously unable to cater with WiFi signal barely covering 10% of the multi storey house. The family was also complaining about the reliability of the router which was supposed to be disconnecting on occasional basis, causing unnecessary stress.

  • 2. The Design

At Mahonyt, we took all the concerns of the customer into the account and prepared deployment and maintenance plan.

Firstly, we have measured the premises in order to plan how many access points will be needed. We wanted to ensure that there will be enough power provided by our wireless access points and that they can cater for all the users in all the corners of the house.

We also had to deal with unreliable router and take that into the equation. This lead us to conclusion to design a centralised system with three 802.11ac access points managed from one advanced router which provides centralised access to the system.

  • 3. Deployment

In order to provide maximum bandwidth, speed and availability whilst minimising connection delay, we have decided to physically wire all three individual access point directly into the network. We have achieved that by dragging Cat6 cable from the comms cabinet located in the garage into the individual rooms. This was achieved by wiring the cables from the outside of the building in such neat manner that client couldn’t see where the cables are.

Cables are now neatly terminated in patch panel located in the comms cabinet, from where they are patched into the PoE switch. This helped us automatically powering the access points hence there is no need to use power sockets and use additional cables.

We have used business grade router from where the access points are managed. Router was configured to communicate on BT Infinity service and provides users with high internet availability.

  • 4. Resolution

The whole family is now enjoying high speed internet without any blind spaces at all times. Internet speed is not lagging as all the access points are physically wired in the network, hence provide high speed even in the remote corners of the house.

Access points are equipped with extra 4 network ports which can be used to plug computers, laptops or smart TV into so they work as a network switch when there is the need for it.

Our engineers have access to the router using dynamic DNS (DDNS) so that we are able to maintain the router and access points. Every time there is an updated firmware for either the router or the AP, we are able to provide the devices with the latest patches. That is keeping the network safe and secure.
